Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Coleridge, portrait

Samuel Taylor Coleridge, born on October 21, 1772, was the youngest of 14 children born to a parish vicar who had married twice. In 1791, he enrolled at Jesus College, University of Cambridge, where he began to cultivate his poetic talents. During his early years, he fell deeply in love with Sara Hutchinson, an affection that remained unfulfilled. Despite his literary achievements, Coleridge faced significant struggles later in life, including financial difficulties, health problems, and an opium addiction that deeply influenced his writing. His close friendship with William Wordsworth profoundly shaped his work and legacy as a poet of the Romantic era. Coleridge passed away on July 25, 1834, at the age of 61, in Highgate, England.
